As with any other venomous snake in Georgia, watching where you put your hands and feet and never trying to kill or catch the snake are the simple rules that will keep everyone safe. Fortunately, these highly venomous snakes with their extremely fast and accurate strike are not aggressive, high strung creatures. If it is true, I understand why people would be afraid. Sure, this is an extremely dangerous animal. Before everyone jumps to conclusions, as is often the case with everything else reported in the media these days, let’s wait until the facts all come out. Since we are licensed for Gaboons and have experience with them and the fact that we’ve worked in cooperation with the state for many years, we were asked to assist. We were the first to identify it as a Gaboon Viper. Today, Wednesday July 22nd, we were contacted by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in reference to this snake. We’ve received a lot of questions about the Gaboon Viper reported to have been seen in Milledgeville, GA. I reached out to Jason Clark of Southeastern Reptile Rescue and he responded: I hope this post will serve as a comprehensive and non-sensational source of information on the Milledgeville, Georgia Gaboon Viper. I have reached out to various people involved with the investigation of this report and will provide any updates here. It is illegal to own non-native venomous snakes in many states without a permit, including Georgia, but these laws are occasionally broken. How do Gaboon Vipers get to the United States? Well, there are some in zoos, of course, but when exotic snakes show up on the loose and nobody has any good answers why, it is almost surely an escaped or released pet (this truth is likely to upset some people). But five years ago a (dead) Gaboon Viper was found on a trail in Maine and you can’t argue with an actual snake. The jury is out as to whether this was a hoax.

Just last year a shed skin was found in South Carolina but an intensive search never revealed an actual Gaboon Viper. There have been Gaboon Viper scares on the East Coast before. So, I have no evidence that this is a hoax. Further, I have not seen that picture before and can’t find it elsewhere online. The snake in the picture from Georgia does not look like any of the commercially-available Gaboon Viper models or toys that I can find. Its unique patterning and coloration look quite odd on the road, but it has exceptional camouflage in its native habitat (check out the photo on the right to see what I mean). Due to hunting for their meat and skin, there has been a great decline in this species in recent years.The Baldwin Co Sheriff’s office here in GA released a photo and statement on FB today that a gaboon viper was spotted in town.
The Seba python is now confined primarily to game reserves, national parks, and isolated sections of the African savanna. They have large, recurved teeth and their bites are very painful.
If they cannot escape when threatened, they bite and contract with great ferocity. They have a reputation for being particularly aggressive. Juveniles, however, are usually active at dawn and dusk, preferring to retreat to the safety of a rock formation or hollow tree for the day and night. They can swim well and stay submerged for a long time, to avoid potential threats.Īlthough they are mainly nocturnal when they are adults, Seba pythons can be active during the day to sunbathe and thermoregulate. They mostly stay on the ground, but sometimes climb trees in a pinch. Like many other species of snakes, they are quite solitary, seeking out members of their own species only during the breeding season. The head also has two light-colored bands that form a spearhead in the shape of the mouth. They have a triangular head covered in irregular scales, which are usually blackish-gray brown in color. The Seba Python is the largest snake in Africa, with an average size of 3 to 5 m in length and a maximum of 8 m.
